#IDAHOT : International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia & Biphobia

Untitled

May 17th is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia & Biphobia.  Started in 2004 to specifically  draw the attention of policymakers, opinion leaders, social movements, the public and the media to the violence and discrimination experienced by LGBTI people internationally. The day is now celebrated in more than 130 countries, including 37 where same-sex acts are illegal, with 1600 events reported from 1280 organizations in 2014. These mobilizations unite millions of people in support of the recognition of human rights for all, irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.

The organizers stress that The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is not one centralized campaign; rather that it is a moment that everyone can take advantage of to take action.  They need support, donations & volunteers to help hundreds of organizations around the world to take action on May 17th as many of them,  act under extremely difficult conditions and can’t rely on local solidarities.  http://dayagainsthomophobia.org/support-the-movement-donate-now/

It isn’t just  the 81 countries in the world where same sex relationships are criminalized that we need to think about today as this rather stunning new video from Australia’s AFL featuring straight footballers clearly shows there is a great deal of ignorance and phobias about our own local communities that we should all be aware of, and help change now for the better.
