With a recent report from GLAAD decrying the declining number of LGBT characters on US TV these days, it was especially wonderful to welcome back the ground-breaking award-winning series that gave visibility to our community in such a positive and heartwarming manner.
When NBC’s WILL & GRACE ended in 2006 after 8 highly successful seasons it was like saying goodbye to a favorite every member of our family. Every gay man we knew wanted to be as good-looking as Will, be as funny as Jack, and as bitchy as Karen. We prayed too that we would never inherit Grace’s singing voice.
As much as we missed them, like so many people we were more than a tad wary when NBC announced that the Fab Four were coming back after over a decade’s hiatus. The world has changed so much for the LGBT community since then … we can even get married now … and we foolishly worried how Will & Grace would fit in.
However, the moment we caught sight of Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally reprise their roles with the new season which simply picked back up right where it left off, it felt like they had never been away. With the usual sharp and wickedly funny scripts about these best friends navigating life together once again, they gave us a voice again to celebrate the growing acceptance of our community.
Equally important Will & Grace The Revival, without missing a single beat, were there to address parts of contemporary political agendas which give us every reason to be concerned, and they did so in their own inimitable very witty ways.
