If QUEERGURU ever had such a thing as a Bucket List ( but we don’t) then this show from the legendary PENNY ARCADE would be at the very top of it. How we have lived on this earth so very long and still not caught her act is one of life’s unsolved mysteries.
Penny Arcade aka Susana Ventura has been the undisputed NY queen of performance artist for decades now. She is a writer, poet and experimental theatre-maker known for her rapid-fire uncensored wit that spares absolutely no-one. She has this magnetic stage presence and has been the inspiration for countless other performers who owe so much of their own craft to both her talent and skills
As her work has always focused on the other and the outsider, giving voice to those marginalized by society, she is a true gay icon. It has been her willingness to speak truth to power and champion our cause and those of others that have been at the very expense of he career. Above all is the mere fact that she has used her performance as a transformative act marks her as a true original in American theatre and performance.
Penny Arcade’s premiered Bitch! Dyke! Faghag! Whore! back in 1990 during the height of the culture wars, when ultra-conservative politicians pressured the National Endowment for the Arts into defunding artists who made work that was considered “offensive to the average person.” It has been her biggest hit, and as Arcade sees a need to reassess the subject matter of censorship now—especially the “self-censorship coming from the left in the form of political correctness in today’s culture, its very inch as relevant today.
