Its not just the Queen of Hearts that is being fired but also her royal cousins of the Queens of Spades, Diamonds, Clubs After being around since the 15th Century, a 23 year old Dutch woman Indy Mellink has decided it’s time for them to go.
What enraged her so was the hierarchy which makes the King worth more than the Queen. Mellink stated “this subtle inequality influences people in their daily life because it’s just another way of saying ‘Hey, you’re less important.”
The problem just doesn’t end there claims Mellink, a psychology graduate “I thought about it and most of the picture cards you see, are white people. It’s always a white king, queen, and jack. Whether that’s intended or not; they’re certainly not people of color. I didn’t think that was representative either. That’s another a form of inequality.”
So Mellink has made her own set of political correct cards , which use precious metals in place of gendered authority figures. Gold bars replace the King; silver coins now takes the spot the Queen once occupied; and the Jack has been replaced by a bronze shield
We would hate to nit pick ith this very earnest young woman BUT isn’t gold worth so much than silver so there is still not complete equality . And doesn’t it all dilute the very fact that most people actually play cards for fun?
