Christopher Sousa: New Work

Despite Provincetown’s significant LGBT community and also its reputation as a major art colony, there is in fact barely a handful of local artists producing good queer art. We  have already featured a couple this year :James Frederick and Gaston Lacombe who are having very successful seasons,  but they are relative newcomers compared to Christopher Sousa .

For the past 14 years Sousa has been carving out both a name and a very loyal following for his very distinctive art that usually features one of his fascinating coterie of handsome sinewy men that grace his canvasses, seemingly carelessly but often with very piercing stares.

For his latest Exhibit that opens at The William Scott Gallery  on August 3rd 2018, Sousa’s new work is  very loosely based on or inspired by the tarot deck.  You can also spot that. surrealist and metaphysical art was also an influence on him this time around too.  Most of his pieces are started over the winter when PTown is emptied of people and the fierce weather makes the place so foreboding, and Sousa told Queerguru that he was listening to a lot of psychedelic music from the 60s and that informed his work as well.

We asked Sousa about how in a barely-populated town could he find a steady flow of models, and it turns out this is something of an issue now.  “I put the word out on instagram that if any of my online friends were interested in sending reference photos to “model” for paintings, I was open. The response was great. I found that being limited to whatever images I was sent (some of which were of dubious photo quality and very unlike the poses, lighting, etc, that I was used to) actually broke me out of my comfort zone a bit and guided the project into unexpected directions.”

Here is a sneak preview of some of the work that will be in the new Show.

P.S. Queerguru would love you to bits if you did us one tiny favor.  Despite the fact that we have had almost 270K hits on YouTube (yeah!) they will not give us a single cent of the advertising money that they make off us until we have more subscribers.  Won’t cost you a dime,  but it will help support our site. Just simply click on the link below.  Thank you very much!
