Queer photographer GEORGE DANIELL Exhibit opens in new Miami Beach Museum

As part of the celebrations for Miami Beach Gay Pride the city is getting a brand new art venue called the George Daniell Museum,

It will feature the full collection of prominent queer  American photographer and artist George Daniell who worked for Time, Life and Esquire Magazines, and who  in the 1940’s and 1950’s captured the images of many celebrities (Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Lena Horne, Georgia O’Keefe, etc).

Daniell was  in a forty-year relationship with the artist Stephen Dorland, until his death in 1983, after which his companion was Roy Oxley, 55 years younger than him.  Danielli’s more personal photographs, brought a homoerotic sensibility to his work, and will be shown in its  entirety  for the very first time at the Museum.

“The new George Daniell Museum will be of great interest to both the LGBTQ and the mainstream communities, to see the both the glamour and grit of yesteryear, with a strong dose of homoeroticism,” said Helmut Schuster, Director of the George Daniell Museum.

The George Daniell Museum will be housed in the new Wilzig Museum Building located in South Beach, which currently houses the World Erotic Art Museum (WEAM), the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to fine erotic art, founded by the late Naomi Wilzig in 2005. The Wilzig Museum Building is also home of two permanent exhibitions. One features the life of Magnus Hirschfeld and is presented by Humboldt University Berlin, and the other documents the life of Alfred Kinsey (the sex researcher who famously determined that 10% of the population is gay or lesbian) and is curated by the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University.

The grand opening of the George Daniell Museum .on Wednesday, April 3rd starting at 6pm and will feature music by DJ’s Andres Aguirre and Mayra Jaimes, an open bar, food and access to the museum galleries. The event is free to attend.
