If you like loads of melodrama with your gay drama then this brand new telenovela is absolutely perfect for you. By definition (well at least Urban Dictionary’s) these Spanish and Latino soap operas are famed for having strange plots, even for soap operas, and some of the worst offenses of overacting ever. It’s just surprising to us that there has never been an all gay one until now.
Univision has just launched this first ever gay-led primetime telenovela entitled El Corazón Nunca Se Equivoca (that translates into The Heart is Never Wrong). It is a groundbreaking first for this giant Spanish-language network that has millions of global viewers.
The story is of a young gay couple Cuauhtémoc or “Temo” (Joaquín Bondoni) and Aristóteles (Emilio Osario) as they start a new life together moving for college from Oxaca in Mexico City, the fifth largest city in the world.
Once they are there Aristóteles works away to be a musician while Temo pursues his interest in politics, but life for them won’t be easy, even being young and in love. It is however not just about them adjusting to being a couple but also shows the difficulties of being gay in Mexican society.
This groundbreaking new series is the latest development at Univision who have featured gay couples as characters on other programs in the past. Hopefully this will arouse more public awareness in Mexico where homophobia is rife and same sex marriage is still illegal
El Corazón Nunca Se Equivoca (The Heart is Never Wrong) is subtitled and can be viewed on the Univision network globally
