One of the very many things on a ‘must see and must do’ list for every visitor to Provincetown each summer, is to go see the one performer who is more Cher than the diva herself. I’m not really sure how long the legendary Thirsty Burlington has been headlining in this gay summer mecca at the tip of Cap Cod, I just know that my stay up there each year is never complete until I see Thirsty strut down Commercial Street in full regalia just after Tea Dance, as it serves as a reminder to go see her in one of my favorite shows.
I am of course one of her many regular fans, and I just discovered this year are are some very famous folk too, like the nine-time Emmy Award Winning Designer Bob Mackie who I interviewed for PTV this year, and he certainly knows the real thing when he sees it.
Now Thirsty’s (aka Scott Townsend) own story has been made into a fascinating feature film, and behind all that glamour and the sequins is the tale of a tough childhood struggle that looked like it may spiral out of control until Scott became Thirsty and found his own gender fluidity. This compelling and sometimes heartbreaking story brought to the screen by Margo Pelletier is a story of triumph over adversity and will only make audiences everywhere love Thirsty even more.
However before they can release the movie on to the completed film festival circuit this year the Producers need to raise the last part of their funding to pay for licensing fees for the 12 songs that Thirsty performs in the movie.
