After Parkland : a Day of Conversation to Commemorate the 2nd Anniversary

Tomorrow February 12th there will be a Nationwide Day of Conversation screenings to commemorate the second anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.  There are over 100 Cities (see link to full list below) that will participate in one-night Demand Film screenings with community partners to turn tragedy into progress.

The movie being screened is AFTER PARKLAND by filmmaker Emily Taguchi and Jake Lefferman. In the days after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018 that killed 17 people and launched a nationwide student movement,  the filmmakers embedded with students and families whose lives were forever transformed.

They include senior David Hogg, who recorded his class during the attack and became the face of the Never Again movement; freshman Brooke Harrison, who was in the first classroom under attack; Sam Zeif, a senior who was locked down in the same building, texting with his little brother and unsure if they would ever see each other again; Andrew Pollack, the father of 18- year-old Meadow, who was killed after being shot nine times; and the loved ones of 17-year-old Joaquin Oliver, including his parents Manuel and Patricia, girlfriend Victoria Gonzalez, and best friend Dillon McCooty.

As usual Trump’s Administration DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING , and by the end of that year there were 340 Mass Shootings in the US in which 373 people died and 1346 were  injured.  The LGBTQ Community are well aware of the heavy price paid the NRA’s stranglehold on politicians when even after the 49 deaths at the Pulse Nightclub, it was business as usual

David Hogg is still refusing to sit by idly whilst the politicians still do more than offer meaningless ‘thoughts and prayers’ iday he said  “In the days after that horrific tragedy, the NRA wanted us to believe we had no power to change anything. But my peers and I didn’t buy that. Just a bunch of kids, we declared war on their deadly agenda and took on one of the most powerful lobbies in Washington.”

At first they ignored us. Then they laughed at us. Soon enough they fought us. And now? We’re going to keep fighting until we win.

We know that the NRA and the politicians in their pocket will never do what it takes to stop these senseless, preventable tragedies. So we win by working around them – and I’m fighting as hard as I possibly can alongside Ban Assault Weapons NOW to do just that.
