All Over The Guy

There are actually 3 guys to be all over in this very lightweight but immensely enjoyable romantic comedy. And one girl too.  The girl and one of the guys hook up and are deeply entwined after just two meetings, and about one minute later are even planning their wedding and to live happily ever after. The other two guys are gay, so it takes them far longer for them to realize that they could possibly be soul-mates: in fact it takes the entire 95 minutes of the movie for them to actually get there.  It is L.A. after all so there is great deal of angst-ridden, soul searching head-banging, and naturally blaming their dysfunctional parents for every single bad thing in their lives to date.

Written by Dan Bucatinsky who plays Eli the nerdy insecure overly sensitive boyfriend-seeking journalist who falls heavily for recovering alcoholic moody masculine Tom (played by handsome Richard Rucculo) who has serious committment phobia.  As their straight best friends rush into their relationship, the two men fall into bed together once and then embark on seriously avoiding each other lest they should actually end up liking each other. Well, Eli has the hots from Tom from day one, but even his patience gets stretched with all the mini dramas.

The slightly far fetched script at least has the benefits of being in the hands of an excellent cast. Besides the lead actors, ‘Everyone Loves Raymond’s’ Doris Roberts plays a wickedly funny Clinic receptionist who just wants to hear saucy ‘dirt’, Adam Goldberg and Sasha Alexander play the soon-to-be-married couple: Andrea Martin is Eli’s overbearing shrink mother.  And I’m guessing thanks to Dan Bucatinsky’s real life partner director Don Roos, regular actors of his Christina Ricci  and Lisa Kudrow have scene stealing cameos.

It would be very easy to pick holes in All Over The Guy in an exercise in film criticism, but simply taken at face value it is a rather delightful heart-tugging gay romantic comedy that will really appeal to any hopeless romantic.  This one in particular has watched it several times ….
