Legendary civil rights activist Bayard Rustin’s story is finally about to be filmed.

We know that the last tenant of The White House will not be getting a job too soon as he is going to be so busy just trying to stay out of jail.  But the last real President is always working on several projects at any given time.

He and former first lady Michelle have formed a film production company called Higher Ground.  Their very first film was the documentary  American Factory about the demise of the US car industry which won them the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

More recently they Executive Produced the award winning and very powerful documentary Crip Camp about the fight for rights for the disabled community , which may even give them their second Oscar.

Now it has just been announced that the Obamas are linking up with queer Academy Award winner Dustin Lance Black (Milk) to make a long overdue biopic on the controversial activist Bayard Rustin    An openly queer man, he  was an American leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights.. He was a key architect of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and trusted advisor of Martin Luther King.Jr.

Rustin died in 1987, but in  2013, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Only last year Rustin finally received a posthumous pardon for gay sex crimes,

Openly gay, African-American director George C. Wolfe (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,) will direct the film from a script by Black.  No dates have been set yet, watch this space for future updates
