Netflix’s two major musicals : Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Prom

Netflix has not one, but two big musical films about to be released and vying for both our hearts, minds  and  Academy Awards too.

The first one Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, an adaptation of August Wilson’s  Tony Award Winning play about the Chicago blues titan. With  Viola Davis giving a sublime performance in the title role that makes her seem almost a shoo-in for her second Oscar.  But also there also could one lined up for Chadwick Boseman (‘Black Panther’) as a trumpeter named Levee. It’s the actor’s final role before his death, and its somewhat fittingly is also a career best for the young actor.

The movie arrives on December 18. Watch the first trailer below.

Uber queer producer Ryan Murphy was quick to snap up the film rights to this 2018 Broadway musical.

The Prom is  the story of two stage stars Dee Dee (Meryl Streep) and Barry (James Corden) having to face the fact that their latest Broadway show is a flop.  And one that big enough to seriously dent their careers

Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal , the head of the PTA  has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose).

Hearing of this Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma’s predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie (Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. But when their self-absorbed celebrity activism unexpectedly backfires, the foursome find their own lives upended as they rally to give Emma a night where she can truly celebrate who she is.

We know that Miss Streep can make us go see the (very unwatchable) Mamma Mia (!) so with good material like this, maybe she can rack up her 21st Academy Award Nomination (she won 3 of them).

The Prom will be in Select Theaters in December and on Netflix December 11, 2020
