We’re not really sure if HBO Max’s THE PRINCE is a question of art imitating life or vice versa. It’s a wickedly funny parody of the British Royal Family see through the eyes of young Prince George, the seven-year-old heir apparent to the British monarchy.
In November 1992, HM Queen Elizabeth II. In a speech, marking her Ruby Jubilee on the throne, she said she was having an ‘annus horribilis” a Latin phrase, meaning “horrible year”. With all but one of her children getting messy divorces, the Royal Family were no longer the paragons of virtue they were meant to be.
Fast forward 10 years and now the British Royals have more scandal and melodrama than even the most salacious soap opera. Talk about the Real House Husbands of Buckingham Palace! Sadly it’s gone from comedy to unbelievable farce almost reminding Her Majesty of the salacious behavior of one of her predecessors Henry VIII.
The Prince animated series must therefore seem like joy and sheer relief to HM after all this, and we hope she laughs as hysterically as we do in the Queerguru Office when we watch it.
HRH Prince George (voiced by creator Gary Janetti) is enjoying his time in primary school while spending his childhood in the palace along with younger siblings Princess Charlotte (Sophie Turner) and Prince Louis (Paul Anderson), and his butler Owen (Alan Cumming), Meanwhile, the rest of the royals, including Queen Elizabeth (Frances de la Tour), Prince Charles (Dan Stevens) and Camilla, along with Prince William (Iwan Rheon) and Kate Middleton (Lucy Punch) just live their everyday lives as royals. In California, Prince Harry (Orlando Bloom) and Meghan Markle (Condola Rashad) are building their lives as working commoners.
It’s packed with irreverent comments, as well as cursing (including “f–k”), and occasional fantasy violence, some of which include shootings and blood. There are references to drinking, too.
