THE ROAD HERE: a fresh new take on queer history

If you are a regular reader of QUEERGURU then you’ll know that we are passionate about queer history .  So too is a 29 year old Brit in East London called Jim Kemp the creator behind an excellent new Podcast that we have become addicted too.

You would never guess that THE ROAD TO HERE Kemp heads  is a one-man operation that is run from his bedroom in Hackney .  He has a day job for 4 days a week  so that he can spend the rest of his time finding guests, interviewing, hosting, and scripting.

So far he has interviewed MARK BUNYAN  Co-founder of the Pink Singers and part of the driving force behind Gay’s The Word bookshop.

Filmmaker RON PECK who directed the 1978 classic gay movie NIGHTHAWKS

and veteran queer activist from Manchester Paul Fairweather

And next up is another veteran HIV activist and performer JULIAN HOWS ,and also Lady Phyll, co-founder, trustee and executive director of UK Black Pride

When we tracked Kemp down in London he told us that the idea with the podcast “is to represent the rich tapestry of queer history – so far, I’m acutely aware it’s focussed purely on queer white men, but  I’m hoping that – as it grows – I’ll be able to diversify the collection of voices to truly represent our community in all its diverse beauty.”

His inspiration was Eric Marcus’s Making Gay History podcast but Kemp’s own podcast is very much in his own voice, and we find it completely refreshing to hear his new take on our old past

You can listen to THE ROAD HERE on Spotify  and on APPLE PODCASTS
