One of the (many) things Queerguru loves about WICKED QUEER Bostons LGBTQ Film Festival is the attention and support they give to queer short filmmakers. Let’s be clear here, we don’t mean those of limited stature, but the talented creatives that pack their stories into a few minutes. So often overlooked compared to feature filmmakers, but not thankfully by the WQ programming team. In this the 37th year of the annual fest, Wicked Queer has excelled itself with curating 18 different programs of short films. Talk about covering waterfront, the categories include Real Queer Lives, LatinX, Horror, Trans, Men’s, Up and Coming, Senior Moments, Women’s, Middle East, Asian etc etc. |
We chose to review GTFO, and yes it means exactly what you thought. It’s an excellent showcase of the outlandish. The outrageous. The over-the-top. The unnerving. The unconventional. The un-categorizable. Definitely not films you should watch with anyone who is easily shocked.
Queerguru loved them all, but we have three top picks. Firstly Pride & Prejudice & Gays. We’re not sure what the ‘unmarried’ author Jane Austin would make of this, but we are firm believers that so many classics are just ripe to be queered -up. This has gender swaps, cross-dressing, Georgian glamour with a contemporary flair. Didi Rizzo’s delightfully stylish film also stars celebrity drag queen Shea Couleé.
Fraternal filmmakers Shivin and Sunny 15-minute romance The Lonely Prince is quite a lavish production that is seriously stunning to look at. However, it is the story of the lonely Indian Prince that grabs you by the heartstrings. All his lavish wealth does not make him happy, but he only realizes that when he invites a (devastatingly handsome) Sculptor to his court to create a piece of art just for him.
