Lgbt movie fans may be disappointed that Call Me By Your Name just won one of the 4 Academy Awards it was nominated for, but we are not in France where they are happy to have BPM, Robin Campillo’s AIDS drama sweep the boards at the Cesars walking away with 6 Awards, including Best Picture.
It was, however, a good night for openly gay veteran filmmaker James Ivory who at aged 89 (that’s even older than Christopher Plummer) finally got his first Oscar at his 4th attempt. He won for his Adapted Screenplay of Call Me By Your Name, but in the past with his late life partner Ishmael Merchant he had directed 40 movies, 6 of which won Academy Awards including A Room With A View, and Howards End.
Ivory, the oldest person to win an Oscar sported a custom-made shirt that had a picture of Timothee Chalamet emblazoned on the front. Chalamet, at 22 years old the star of Call Me By Your Name was the youngest nominee last night but lost out on the Best Actor Award to Gary Oldman.
Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Lelio delighted the audience last night by winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Picture for his movie A Fantastic Woman. His star Daniela Vega made Oscar history by being the first ever transgender actress to be a presenter at the Awards.
Pixar’s animated movie Coco’s win made for one of the most touching moments of the night when Adrian Molina, Coco’s co-director, and Darla K. Anderson, Coco’s producer both thanked their same-sex spouses and the importance of representation in their moving speeches.
