Naz & Matt Foundation and the fight against religious homophobia

Posted on Categories queerguru.tvLabels , , , ,

Unassuming Matt Mahmood-Ogston is an unlikely LGBTQ hero, and even though he may deny it, he is exactly that.  He turned the tragic death of his long-time fiance Dr Naz Mahmood into creating the Naz-Matt Foundation to stop religious homophobe.

Three days after 34 year old Naz had told his Muslim parents he was gay, their reactions were so severe and threatening, that he actually took his own life.

In the midst of his grief, when he confesses all he could think of initially was of joining Naz, Matt was inspired to start the Foundation.  He wanted to help ensure that no gay person should ever be persecuted by their family for whatever religious beliefs they held.

On  the eve of the Foundations new short  film “My God Im Queer’ being screened at the Iris Prize Festival, Queerguru took the opportunity to talk with Matt about his own life’s journey and that of the Foundation.    It is impossible not to be moved by him, and also be grateful for the essential work that he is spearheading

Oliver Hermanus talks about MOFFIE his excellent harrowing coming-of-age drama

Posted on Categories queerguru.tvLabels , , ,

The fact that ‘moffie’ is the South African equivalent of ‘faggot’ sets the tone for one of the most harrowing coming-of-age films we have ever seen. It is set in South Africa in 1981 in apartheid where the white minority still dominates and persecutes the ‘colored’ population. They however are not the enemy in this war drama, as the country is obsessed with fighting neighboring Angola with its Soviet-backed troops. If there is one thing that the South Africans hate as much as ‘colored’ people it is Communists. It goes without saying that ‘moffies’ are on that list too.

To keep the Army manned there is mandatory conscription for boys 18 years old ……some even just 16. This is the tale of just one of them

Queerguru talks with director Oliver Hermanus on the eve of IFC Filmsreleasing the film on VOD and in select movie theaters.
